The ride to Butare was long – three hours of switch back after switch back. Van after van passed us carrying 18 passengers. In Rwanda they call these public taxis: Twegerane, which means “let’s squeeze”. Truly they are packed in there like sardines. The roadside travelers continue to amaze me; hundreds of people walking mile after mile carrying heavy loads on their heads.
